Military plane crash kills 12 in Myanmar
Special Representative:
The Mandalay City Fire Service reported the accident in a post on social media on Thursday morning, June 10, local time.
The plane was en route from the capital, Nay Pyi Taw, to Pine O Luin, Reuters reported, citing a report by Mayawadi, which is owned by Myanmar’s military. The plane crashed 300 meters from a steel plant near the town of Mandalay. However, no civilians or installations in the area were damaged in the incident. The plane had six military officers and the rest of the crew. The officials were on their way to the main Buddhist temple in Pine Oo Luin to attend a ceremony. A pilot who survived the wreckage of the plane rescued a passenger and took him to hospital, locals said. They were later transferred to a military hospital.
Note: Myanmar is one of the weakest air safety countries in the world. Minor accidents often occur while flying in the country. On February 1 this year, Aung San Suu Kyi’s elected government was overthrown by the country’s military. Since then, the pro-democracy forces have been clashing with the security forces. At least 750 people have been killed in the conflict since April.
