Bakalia police have arrested Zahidul Alam for attacking and firing on a freedom fighter’s family for putting up a signboard at a cemetery in East Bakalia, Chittagong. The arrested Zahid is said to be a follower of CMP-listed terrorist Yaqub Ali.

He was arrested in a raid in Banshkhali police station area around 12pm on Tuesday (June 15). According to him, a foreign pistol and two rounds of ammunition were recovered.

The matter was brought to the notice of the media at a press conference held at the office of CMP Deputy Commissioner (South) Vijay Basak on Wednesday, June 18 at 12:30 pm.

CMP Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media) Shah Mohammad Abdur Rauf, Additional Deputy Commissioner (South) Aminul Islam, Assistant Commissioner Chawkbazar Zone Kamrul Islam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bakalia Police Station Ruhul Amin and other police officials were present.

According to the details of the incident, a clash took place between the two sides on June 11 over the erection of a signboard at the Bara Maulvi Cemetery in Abdul Latif Hatkhola area of ​​Bakalia police station. Photos and videos of several people at gunpoint in the clashes went viral through social media. Besides, pictures of the gunmen were also published in various media.

It was informed at the press conference that Zahid was arrested from the deep forest of Banshkhali last Tuesday night. During preliminary interrogation he found a foreign pistol. Police recovered a foreign pistol and two rounds of ammunition on his information. Four people who were shot in the June 11 attack are still being treated. The arrested Zahid will be handed over to the court for a 5-day remand, police said.

Later, after watching the video footage, I identified the gunman who attacked and shot at the freedom fighter’s family. He was arrested from Banshkhali on the basis of secret information.
