Several houses of Asrayan Project-2 have collapsed before being handed over and are sinking in tidal waters

Barisal District Representative:

Several houses of the Prime Minister’s Shelter Project-2 built on the occasion of Mujib Year in Mehediganj of Barisal have collapsed before being handed over. Sinking in tidal water.

The demolition of these houses made of low quality construction materials is being widely criticized through social media. The incident took place in Sreepur Union No. 14 of Mehendiganj Upazila.

There were reports of 11 houses collapsing. At the same time, these houses are sinking as soon as the tide rises.

As a result, the houses have become uninhabitable before handing over. The Upazila Nirbahi Officer’s Office informed that the repair of the broken houses has started.

It is learned that 40 houses were constructed in Baherchar village of Sreepur Union under the Prime Minister’s Asrayan-2 project on the occasion of Mujib Year.

The incident took place due to complaints from locals, poor quality work and lack of supervision by the upazila administration. ‍ The construction of the houses is under the supervision of the Upazila Nirbahi Officer. But the union chairman was seen building the houses. However, chairman Harun Aur Rashid has denied the allegations.

The technical committee formed by the local administration has blamed cyclone Yas for the collapse of the house. Inform UNO.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer Shahadat Hossain Masud told reporters, “I do not have the authority to say anything about allotment of houses and selection of places.” Because it’s been two months since I came. The construction of the first phase house was done during the time of the former Upazila Nirbahi Officer.

He said 40 houses in Baherchar were flooded on the day of cyclone Yas. On the same day, the chairman informed me that the house had collapsed. Two houses were completely destroyed and nine were damaged. An investigation committee was formed after the house collapsed. The report of that committee mentioned that the house collapsed due to cyclone Yas, not due to construction defects. The allotment was then applied for to repair the house. Due to the delay in getting the allocation, it has taken time to start the renovation work.

Noting that repair work has started in the last three days, UNO said that the mechanics have been asked to repair the houses as per the wishes of the beneficiaries.
