1 prisoner dies, 11 rescued after trawler sinks in Meghna river

A fishing trawler with 12 fishermen sank in the Meghna river at Hatiyar in Noakhali. At that time, 11 fishermen in the trawler were rescued alive with the help of other trawlers in the vicinity and the body of one was recovered.

The Coast Guard recovered the body of a prisoner from the Meghna River in Char Bogula area of ​​Charking Union in Hatia Upazila around 8:30 pm on Thursday (July 29), six and a half hours after he went missing in the accident.

The deceased was identified as Shyamal Chandra Jaldas, 30, son of Motilal Chandra Jaldas of South Shullukia Char Bogula Market area of ​​Charking union of the upazila.

Earlier on the same day, a fishing trawler sank in the Meghna River near Kazir Ghat in Char Ishwar Union of the upazila at around 1pm.

Coastguard South Zone Officer Lieutenant M Tahsin Rahman confirmed the matter. He added that a fishing trawler with 12 fishermen goes to the Meghna river from Hatia around noon for fishing. At that time, when the trawler reached near Kazir Ghat of Meghna river, it was caught by hostile weather and strong currents and the trawler along with 12 fishermen overturned and sank. At that time, 11 fishermen in the trawler were rescued alive by some fishing trawlers. A fisherman named Shyamal Chandra went missing. Later, the Coast Guard Hatia received the news at around 6 pm and conducted a two-and-a-half hour operation and recovered the body of the missing prisoner at around 8.30 pm.
